The Mexican wedding shirt, which is also known as a Guayabera, is a classic choice for a beach or destination wedding. Usually made from linen or cotton these shirts are a great combination of comfort and style that provide comfort as well as elegance while you are attending a beach wedding of other semi-formal event. These shirts are designed to be worn outside you trousers which means you have plenty of room to move around and also makes you more comfortable. Linen is my favorite material for these shirts because it’s natural qualities help to keep you cooler and fresher on those hot summer days.

The Classic Guayabera

There are a number of stories, depending on who you talk to, surrounding the origin of this classic looking shirt. Hence the many names such as the Mexican wedding shirt or the Guayabera. But most everyone agrees that these shirts have origins with simple farmers and were designed for function – that’s why a traditional design has four pockets.

So how does a short worn by farmers become the standard wedding shirt? One reason the Mexican wedding shirt is so popular is the exquisite detail and design as well as craftsmanship these shirts exhibit. The Guayabera begins with the traditional four pockets, a straight bottom (designed to be worn outside your trousers) with two panels and pleats, varying from four to ten. In a true classic design the shirt will have a matching shirt button over the top of each pocket and sometimes one at each side at the bottom of the hem. Many Mexican wedding shirts will also be adorned with intricate embroidery work as well. Over time the basic design has evolved but the traditional shirt is still my favorite. If you are attending a wedding, whether as the groom, part of the wedding part, or simply a guest, the classic looking white linen shirt is the proper choice but you can also find designs today in a variety of colors, especially pastels.
